How to Maintain your Battery Acid

Do you know the main reason lead-acid batteries break down and lose capacity? Battery sulfation! This is the cause 80% of the time. There are other reasons why battery acid does not work effectively. Here’s how to maintain battery acid health -

  • Do not allow the acid battery to stand completely in an idle position for a long period. It can cause the battery cells to become inactive.

  • Make sure you do not charge the battery with a high current because the higher rate of charging may cause the high-temperature rise and excessive gassing. This will eventually result in loss of fluid and may cause overflowing of electrolytes from the acid battery cells.

  • After discharge of the acid battery, it should be immediately charged before it returns to floating service. Otherwise, it may rapidly lead to the deposition of sulfate film on the plates.

  • The battery cells should be charged gently at a normal rate so that there is no chance of gassing and the temperature will rise over a temperature of 40° C. Otherwise, it can damage the acid battery cells. During the charging of the acid battery, it needs continue Monitoring. If gassing starts back and the temperature reaches a particular point, the charging rate should be decreased.

  • The voltage of acid battery cells can be checked much before the conclusion of charging and each battery cell should be equally charged so that reading should be tailed with existing records.

  • If the level of electrolyte inside the battery comes down, it will be filled with distilled water up to the mark on the battery cell only. This is done to compensate for the loss of fluid of battery water that happens due to the evaporation process.

  • At the time of filling up the distilled water in the battery cell, make sure you carefully watch the level of electrolyte in battery cells that does not exceed the line. Otherwise, there can be a chance of overflowing of the electrolyte during the gassing of the acid battery. A high level of the electrolyte can soften up the sealing compound of the top cover and the leakage in the battery cell.

  • The acid battery cell is discharged up to a particular level and then it can be overcharged once in again 3 months. The rate of overcharging can be followed by particular manufacturers. This is important to maintain the acid battery storage in the right state.

  • When the gravity of the electrolyte is measured, it is not be forgotten to correct for the temperature. So, all the hydrometers should be kept clean completely with distilled water, or else the hydrometers cause errors in reading.
